Medicine folk is a project that documents through images the variety of material objects – cultural and ritual – that are sold in Latinx botanicals in NYC and are used to heal – physically and spiritually – diseases of the soul, attract love, prosperity or ward off evil spirits. These objects range from amulets, candles, religious figures, spiritual soaps, herbal remedies, potions, magic powders, to sacred icons. Using studio photography, I build sets with a vernacular composition nuanced by strident, saturated and pastel colors, highlighting the aesthetic elements of these objects and placing them as a work of art or an archaeological vestige.
